Industry: Manufacturing & Distribution[cite: 6]

“That’s where ESG Pro made a transformational impact. Their cutting-edge IQ GHG platform completely streamlined our emissions reporting process, eliminating the need for manual spreadsheets and enabling real-time data aggregation… Thanks to ESG Pro, we’ve moved from being behind on our regulatory requirements to leading the way in transparent, accurate, and efficient carbon reporting.”[cite: 6]

— Alastair Peat, Head of Supply Chain, IDS[cite: 6]

The Client & Challenge[cite: 6]

With over 12,000 product lines, International Decorative Surfaces (IDS) is the UK’s largest distributor of decorative surfaces, offering wall panelling, flooring, worktops, laminates, and solid surfaces sourced globally.[cite: 6] The company upholds its responsibility as a supplier, manufacturer, and distributor, putting sustainability and ethics at the forefront of its decisions.[cite: 6]

Acquired by Saint-Gobain in 2000, IDS expanded to 17 sites across the UK.[cite: 6] With a substantial transportation operation and complex logistics importing materials from across the globe, the challenge of carbon reporting was considerable.[cite: 6] A key hurdle was quantifying emissions across Scope 1, 2, and the 15 categories of Scope 3—accounting for owned, rented, and leased sites and vehicles, as well as capital goods, waste, and leased assets.[cite: 6]

Target and Time frame

The Objectives[cite: 6]

Because the business was behind on meeting regulatory demands, ESG Pro was selected to fulfill three core objectives:[cite: 6]

  • Ensure annual compliance with the UK SECR (Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting) regulation.[cite: 6]
  • Achieve compliance with the UK’s ESOS (Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme) regulation.[cite: 6]
  • Satisfy the construction industry’s demands for comprehensive carbon emissions reporting to SBTi standards.[cite: 6]

ESG Pro Initiatives & Strategy[cite: 6]

By completing SECR, SBTi, and ESOS into a single coherent project, IDS saved many hours of effort and was able to engage with a single supplier.[cite: 6] The strategy included several key initiatives:[cite: 6]

IQ GHG Platform[cite: 6]

Provided seamless integration and delivered nearly instant emissions calculations, eliminating manual spreadsheets.[cite: 6]

Solar Power & Electrification[cite: 6]

Negotiated a Power Purchase Agreement for a 50MW solar array (zero CapEx) and created a fleet-wide plan for electrification.[cite: 6]

Carbon Champions Training[cite: 6]

Conducted a widely praised 3-day classroom-based training course, culminating in examination and certification for the team.[cite: 6]

Procurement Optimisation[cite: 6]

Enabled IDS to recover the cost of consultancy and benefit the firm’s cash-flow for several years to come.[cite: 6]

The Result & Impact[cite: 6]

ESG Pro’s expertise ensured full regulatory compliance while providing actionable insights to enhance the sustainability strategy.[cite: 6] The process culminated in a superbly professional emissions report which has benefited the business from a marketing standpoint, allowing IDS to focus on emission reduction initiatives rather than data processing.[cite: 6]

Furthermore, ESG Pro integrated its supply chain auditing process to reduce the client’s carbon footprint organically, simultaneously mitigating the risk of illegal timber products entering their supply chain.[cite: 6]
